2020 Alchemy Arktos 29
Finding the right mix for wheel size and suspension travel is not only a fine art, but a sort of religion for some. For the devotees of 29ers, now that the Alchemy Arktos 29 ventures into the big hoop landscape with 140mm rear travel and 160mm front, it’s time to get very excited.
Expanding their lineup to include a 29 inch option is more than a shrewd business decision; it represents the Denver-based company’s desire to make sure they are providing the ultimate trail options for their customers. And they have once again used the brain of suspension expert Dave Earle to hook up his Sine Suspension to the Arktos 29. Though Earle’s work can be found on other bikes from other manufacturers, this is a suspension system patented for Alchemy, and some say it’s the best you can find anywhere. It is designed to allow you to benefit from all six inches of travel, starting out to be regressive through the first part to mitigate suspension sag and to absorb small bumps. This allows you to climb without losing energy or grip. The midpoint of the stroke then is progressive to keep you nimble in corners without bottoming out on hard hits. Finally in the last 15% of the stroke, it turns regressive again so you can get the benefit of all six inches of travel. And since the design minimizes chainstay growth, you can still count on pedaling efficiently through rough patches.
Something else that might perk up your interest is the use of “Super Boost” in the rear triangle. Now even if we can detect one or two groans in the audience, no one is trying to force a new “standard” down anyone’s throat. Alchemy decided to go with the mega 157×12 rear end to ensure that the wheels could withstand the pounding you’ll naturally want to give the Arktos 29, and frankly the design stiffens up the whole rear structure, which will pay dividends every time you try to accelerate out of a turn. Every tube length and angle of the bike has been calculated to keep the Arktos 29 among the best pedaling, most aggressive trail bikes on the market. So the long top tube with the 66° head angle pairs perfectly with the 160mm travel up front to keep you balanced and aggressive for the descents. And with a max tire width of 2.5 inches, you can rest assured you’ll have the room to slap some burlies on to keep your grip in loose loamy conditions.
The 73mm threaded bottom bracket guarantees an ease of maintenance as well as durability through all sorts of weather and trail conditions. It also gives you endless choice for cranks. It is a designated X1 frame, keeping the weight down and the setup simple. Internal routing for the brakes, shifters and dropper post also make sure that the look is clean. The post mount brakes take 160mm rotors so you can count on serious stopping power in a pinch.
Offering the perfect combination of a slack head angle and responsive steering, the Alchemy Arktos 29 will be as much fun climbing the trails as it is descending. Available in four sizes and two color options, the Arktos 29 also offers semi-custom options if you want to make use of Alchemy’s inhouse painting expertise.
