2020 Alchemy Arktos nine7five
Though mullet bikes have been a thing for some time, the Alchemy Arktos nine7five seems to break the mold a little by using the type of geometry that will enhance the advantages that having a 29 inch front wheel and 27.5 inch rear wheel will introduce.
Designed to be an enduro thrasher, the way Alchemy has spiced the Arktos nine7five aims to make the most of the mixture with the big front wheel able to roll over anything while the smaller rear wheel enables quick handling and a super nice poppy ride. Alchemy likes to point to the fact that their sponsored racer Cody Kelley won the very first race where he used the Arktos nine7five. Proof positive that this setup can make you tons faster, at least if you are a pro. And if you are a normal mortal who loves a bit of aggressive trail and enduro riding, then you’ll still love this bike because it is so much more agile than a 29er while still being able to chomp up the chudder.
Based on the Arktos 29er platform, the Arktos nine7five has been made from a high quality carbon frame with a stiff and light Fox 36 fork with 160mm up front, and 140mm rear travel. Mixing the same travel numbers that they use for the straight-up Arktos 29er with this mullet wheelset not only ensures a nimble ride, but also highlights the versatility and efficiency of the Dave Earle-developed Sine Suspension that is used. This is an Earle suspension system that has been patented for Alchemy, and has many proponents who say it’s the best of the bunch. It is designed to allow you to benefit fully from the available cushioning, starting out to be regressive through the first part to mitigate suspension sag and to absorb small bumps. This allows you to climb without losing energy or grip. The midpoint of the stroke then is progressive to keep you nimble in corners without bottoming out on hard hits. Finally in the last 15% of the stroke, it turns regressive again so you can make the most of that 140mm travel. And since the design minimizes chainstay growth, you can still count on pedaling efficiently through rough patches.
In order to make the package work together, though, Alchemy had to custom design the rear linkage which conveniently results in a 1° slacker head angle compared to the Arktos 29. Combine that with the lower bottom bracket and longish chain stays, and the Arktos nine7five sounds like it could be the enduro racer that dreams are made of. Then the mechanics out there will appreciate the 73mm threaded bottom bracket that guarantees an ease of maintenance as well as durability through all sorts of weather and trail conditions. It also gives you endless choice for cranks. It is a designated 1X frame, keeping the weight down and the setup simple. Internal routing for the brakes, shifters and dropper post also make sure that the look is clean. The post mount brakes take 160mm rotors so you can count on serious stopping power in a pinch. The rear shock has been specially tuned for Alchemy to provide the best in pedaling efficiency and downhill performance.
Most of us aren’t in a position to win races using the extra few seconds gained with the snappy acceleration of the Alchemy Arktos nine7five will gain you, but we all can appreciate the ride quality and efficiency while beating our personal bests. Most of all, it’ll be a total blast.
