2020 Devinci Troy Carbon 29
It’s easy to get hung up on the numbers with mountain and trail bikes continually changing and “modernizing.” And it would be hard to blame a company for following trends, since it is just trying to give the customers what they want. But when you hop on a Devinci Troy Carbon 29, you will realize that the designers at Devinci really ride their bikes instead of imposing faddish geometry numbers. That is such a good thing, and keeps the Troy Carbon 29 as fun, freewheeling and flexible as you need it to be on your all mountain trails.
What will make the Troy Carbon 29 such great fun to ride is the way Devinci has married the geometry with the suspension. Now, you might be thinking, well that’s what everyone says, but the ride feel you will get from this particular combo may be slightly different than you might expect if you are just used to judging a bike’s performance by looking at the numbers. If you think the Troy’s seem a touch conservative, think again because what Devinci has done is resist the impulse to go as long and low as possible, and instead keep the reach that tad shorter than is the current fad, and the seat tube at the 74.5/75° mark, depending on your flip chip setting, but then paired it with the 29 inch wheels, and 140mm rear travel. Stick a 160mm fork on the front, and this baby is not only ready to smash through the roughest conditions on the downhill, but still remains lively enough to be a capable climber.
For the rear shock, Devinci has turned to a trunnion mount that takes up less room than a standard mount, and works by rotating on bearings rather than bushings at the upper link. It will allow you to run longer shocks or lower your standover, and the small bump sensitivity will be improved. Using the split pivot design makes it possible to separate the acceleration forces from the braking forces, which means your rear tire will track the trail like magic, making sure no pedal stroke is lost and keeping you in complete control. The low standover height will also do its bit to keep you planted since the low center of gravity will improve handling and make it easier for you to maneuver your body around as you negotiate obstacles. The geometry can be adjusted to a high or low position using the adjustable flip chip. The flip flop pivot mechanism will make it so that you can lower your position to make it quick and aggressive at low speeds and epically stable when you are slashing it on a steep downhill run.
To ensure you could fit your 29ers with big rubber, Devinci has opted to use SuperBoost Plus 157 spacing, which also has the added benefit of keeping the chainstays shorter. It also allows the frame to accommodate up to a 38 tooth chainring in the front. And you can fit 2.4 inch tires in the frame, which will give you loads of traction. SuperBoost also makes it possible to increase the strength and stiffness of the wheels, increasing the punishment they can take with unexpected hits.
To round out the gratifyingly intelligent design, the Devinci Troy Carbon 29 comes with internal cable routing, a threaded bottom bracket, and ISCG tabs. They have also fit water bottle bosses on the downtube with two position options. The Devinci Troy Carbon 29 is an all mountain bike that will be serious fun to ride while offering the mix of durability and performance that will also make it a capable bike to race.
