2020 Evil Bikes The Calling

What are you looking for when you throw your leg over a bike? Liberation? Affirmation? Justification? Maybe all three. If you know enough to be seriously considering buying the Evil Bikes The Calling, then you not only know what you want, but know how to find it.

Forget about all the “Evil Calling” or “You’ve found your Calling” puns you’ve probably read in the reviews. Clever word play will never give you a full idea of what this bike will really be offering you. If you want a bike that you can just slash down a trail but still will ride like it has huge travel, then The Calling is where you want to go. This Jekyll and Hyde personality means that you can treat it like a DH bike while it treats you to cutting up some trails. But with 130mm of travel in the rear, this bike officially falls in the mid-travel category with 27.5” or 650b wheels. Mad scientist Dave Weagle, you may not be surprised to learn, is behind the single pivot Delta System Suspension that you can thank for having such a tunable and plush ride. The whole point of the system is to maintain leverage rate curves so that it can be tuned according to the different track conditions and damper specifications. A SAG meter on the non-drivetrain side will make it easy for you to customize your suspension setup.

The carbon frame has been given a long and low effect with the geometry, which is something that could be enhanced by the fact that you can adjust the height of your bottom bracket using the Flip Chip, which Evil considers the heart of the Delta system. It will allow you to change the BB height and head angle by flipping around the chip. And as extravagantly fiddled as that may sound, the fact that they use a threaded bottom bracket, bucking the press fit trend, means that you can fit just about any crank and you won’t have that dreaded PF squeak joining your rides. At the rear, the 12mm thru axle bolts directly into the rear derailleur to simplify that typically busy frame area.

Recognizing that heavy downhill runs are going to result in tons of potential chainslap, the Calling comes with a fully integrated carbon eThirteen chain guide to keep slap to a minimum. Feeling that you certainly won’t want to see you beautiful carbon frame gashed up with flying rocks or the occasionally misjudged landing, a molded rubber downtube protector will keep your frame free of the deleterious effects of rocks and branches. Similarly, an integrated rubber protector for the chainstay and seatstay has been included to keep things quiet. Internal cable routing for the components and the dropper seatpost will ensure a crisp clean look.

Whether you want to fool around hucking jumps or want to push the bike to the limits of agility, the Calling from Evil Bikes will be the perfect trail-slash-enduro bike for you.
