2020 Evil Bikes The Following
Though it may sometimes seem like bike companies are forever tweaking their products in an endless cycle of launches, it really is more an effort on the part of companies to keep up with the changing riding styles and ambitions of themselves and their customers. Evil Bikes The Following represents the advance guard of what 29 inch wheel full suspension mountain bikes can be. Aggressive downhill, snappy on the climbs and just mega fun on any trail, this is a bike for which just about anyone can find the perfect use.
Looking at the weight and geo numbers, you’ll quickly get the idea that The Following will slot very neatly into being quite an effective all-mountain and enduro racer, but what makes The Following so special is just how much fun it will be over any terrain. The designers at Evil Bikes committed to the 29 inch wheel size, which means that they didn’t have to think of balancing the geometry to be able to work with both 29 and 27.5 wheel sizes. So they went with a steeper 77° seat tube, in line with what The Offering 29er sports, and effective in getting you into a nice and aggressive climbing position over the pedals. They have also spec’d a fork with a 51mm offset as standard. That’s so that the handling remains snappy and fast, though they have designed it so that the frame can accept 42/44mm reduced offset forks, for those shredders who prefer a touch more stability in the steering.
Stability has already been built into the 1177mm or 46 inch wheelbase which combined with the relatively short 460mm reach in size medium ( S-440, M-460, L-480, XL-500mm) make The Following beautifully flickable, but also so steady railing the berms that it really feels like that magical handling sweet spot. Keeping the chainstays at 430mm helps as well to ensure lively maneuvering options. They were able to keep the chainstays so short thanks largely to the SuperBoost+/157mm rear-end spacing, which also stiffens up the rear wheel region.
As for the suspension, The Following has been optimized for a 120 or 130mm fork while for the rear shock, it’s spec’d with the sublime Rockshox Deluxe Ultimate RCT Debonair Trunnion 165×45. A setup like that is guaranteed to offer the ramp effect that will encourage lively and poppy suspension. The rear suspension has received some special attention with the entire main pivot reworked and considerably widened. The net result is that the incorporated hardware can also be larger and stronger, increasing not only the stiffness but the durability of the system.
Any motorcycle enthusiasts will also be pleased that Evil Bikes has incorporated the option of running the brake lines either traditionally, or what’s now called True-Moto with a right-hand front brake. Purists will also be pleased they have stuck with the threaded bottom bracket to increase durability and reduce any BB creak. You’ll be able also to fit a water bottle in the frame so you can keep up with your hydration even on longer rides. They have even included a rear lockout and zero stack ability, so that anyone who fancies using this on some flowy XC trails will be able to get all the kick out of each acceleration.
Evil Bikes The Following shreds and climbs with the best of them, and will join your list of best bikes ever shortly after you hop on. Available in four sizes and two colors, it will be the envy of all your friends whether you are goofing off at the bike park, or tearing apart a run at Whistlers.
