2020 Ibis DV9
Ibis is a great company that understands that we are not all millionaires with more money than we know what to do with. Rather, most of us need to be careful about just how much money we spend on our bikes. With the Ibis DV9 carbon hardtail with 29 inch wheels, they have gone out of their way to design a bike that can do double duty and then some. Racing, training, having a blast: this is a bike that can do it all and at a reasonable price that makes it all that much more fun.
In case any of us were wondering, one of the advantages of having your dad co-own a bike brand is that he can then queue up the designing of a bike that suits your needs. At least, that seems to be the story behind the DV9. The teenage daughter and high school MTB racer to the CEO of the company needed a bike that was racy enough for her weekend events, versatile enough to be huge fun ripping on the trails, and well-priced enough to be affordable with a summer job. Boom.
But don’t let that lead you to believe that this is a beginner’s bike. In fact, the DV9 has a ton of the best tech and snappiest performance that sometimes are hard to find in bikes twice as expensive. This is a quality carbon frame that offers a modern geometry designed to be balanced and stable in rough, poppy trail riding without giving up the type of responsive handling that will be required for a technical XC race. Since you can run either a 100mm or 120mm suspension fork with this frame, you’ll be getting a slacker head tube angle of 67.4° with a 120mm fork and 68.5° with a 100mm fork. That will let you lay it all out on the descents while the 439mm chainstays will help keep it totally pop-able.
The level of tire clearance has also been designed to keep this baby usable in multiple situations. It can fit up to 2.6 inch tires for those rides when you really just want to thrash some secret back trails, but for lighter race day setups you can run 2.25 inch tires and plow through those technical courses. With Boost hub spacing, you can go as big and burly as you like, or light and snappy. The DV9 is 1x specific, and the max chainring size is 34 teeth. The post mount rear brakes can accommodate up to 203mm rotors for superior stopping power. And the mechanics among you will be pleased that this is a threaded bottom bracket to make things smooth, noiseless, and easy.
The Ibis DV9 comes in four sizes from small to X-large, and anyone who is thinking of buying this bike for a developing shredder in your household, Ibis says that their designer is 5 feet tall, and feels nice and comfy on the small. This is a great bike at an excellent price and will open up a ton of trail adventures for novice and expert alike.
