2020 Ibis Mojo 4
Ibis has a history of designing the perfect bike only to go back to the drawing board, and design something even better. And with the Ibis Mojo 4, they have done it again. With a tweak here and a tuck there, they have made the carbon Mojo 4, a 27.5 inch all-mountain bike, a beast on the downhill and still agile enough on the climb back up.
There’s no question that the folks at Ibis just love riding their bikes, which is why they are always thinking of new ways to make them even more awesome. If you are looking to focus on DH or enduro riding, then going downhill fast is the goal. And to be able to do that with a feeling of confidence and control is essential to going even faster. The Mojo 4 consequently has had the head tube angle slackened to 65.4° versus the 66.8° angle for the Mojo 3 head tube. The result being that the Mojo 4 will be super stable at high speeds on steep downhills. The longer wheelbase compared to the Mojo 3 will also help enhance that feeling of being in total control. Inevitably, the reach has been extended as well, with it measuring between 440mm in the Small to 515mm in the X-Large. They really want to put you in a cockpit position as if in your own fighter plane. You’ll quickly feel the need for warp speed.
Any fan of Ibis will not be surprised to hear, though, that this is still a very balanced bike. As fun as it is going down, that’s not nearly the whole story. No one wants a bike to be a slog to get uphill. After all, climbing is the other side of the coin to descending. Seldom can you do the one without having had to do the other first. So in addition to tweaking the head tube angle, they have steepened up the seat tube angle to 76.6° across all sizes. That will move your center of gravity forward and make churning up those big hills much more natural feeling. The bottom bracket has also been raised relative to the Mojo 3, so you will be able to get over the rough stuff without frequent rock strikes. They kept the chainstays at 425mm to enhance that feeling of being one with the machine and to encourage a playful backend when you want to flick it around a bit.
To enhance that all-mountain all-capability feel, the 140mm front travel has been combined with the essential performance offered by the 130mm of rear travel with the dw-link design. Offering loads of anti-squat and a bottomless feel, the dw-link with the Fox DPS shock offers consistent, predictable compression that feels very linear without getting stuck in the middle of the travel. It will keep you looking for that next huckable situation. What’s interesting with the Mojo 4 and it’s 27.5 inch wheels is that they tapered back the tire clearance from the 2.8 inch that the Boost Plus spacing on the Mojo 3 made possible, and have kept it at a sensible 2.6 inch tire clearance with Boost spacing. It’s a nice setup that offers the perfect mix of grippy traction while keeping the rotational weight lower.
For the Mojo 4, Ibis has committed to it being a 1X specific frame and ISCG 05 compatible with a removable adapter. The threaded bottom bracket makes it easier to maintain, and In-frame molded cable tunnels make it easier to set up and re-cable when needed. A 22-ounce bottle can fit inside the front triangle. For the sizes M-XL, the frame is compatible with 170mm+ dropper posts while the smalls can use 125-150mm droppers.
The Ibis Mojo 4 offers the type of performance we have all come to expect from a carbon Ibis bike, and then still manages to amp up the playfulness on the descents. Available in four sizes either in a pre-built set up or as a standalone frame with the DPS shock.
