2020 Ibis Mojo HD5
When you love an Ibis mountain bike, you might be tempted to wish they’d stop tinkering. But if they did that, they would have never come up with the Ibis Mojo HD5 27.5 inch enduro racing bike, which offers some of the most effective suspension kinematics you could imagine, making every run on all conditions a dream.
Success in the Enduro World Series does not come by accident, and the riders on the Ibis Enduro Race Team have been able to count on their Mojos to take some top placings throughout the 2019 season. Pro feedback has been essential over the years too, so with 170mm front suspension and 153mm rear, the Mojo HD5 can descend like a demon and climb with surprising efficiency. As good as the HD4 was, Ibis actually went back to the drawing board a little when designing the HD5. They’ve slightly slackened the head tube angle to 64.2°, increased the seat tube angle by 2° to make it 76° and added about 20mm to the reach compared to the HD4. Combining the slacker head tube angle with the longer reach will inevitably enhance the stability. They can do this without compromising the snappiness of the ride because they have gone in and custom tuned both the front and rear suspension. They are aptly calling their customization “Traction Tuned” since it has the effect of creating extra light high speed compression and rebound damping, delivering out of this world traction.
At the rear, they are still using their dw-link suspension platform, which offers efficient pedaling even through the roughest terrain thanks to the placement of the pivot. And since this design means that Ibis suspension systems do not need a ton of compression damping to control pedal kickback, which meant that they could have lighter compression tunes for their systems. Then all they needed was a couple of years of rigorous testing to find the perfect tune to balance compression and rebound in the rear and front so that the wheels would always offer laser-steady ground tracking. The resulting increase in control, grip and speed will likely make you have to redefine all your own boundaries on your favorite home runs. In the meantime, updating to at 37mm offset, mirrored with the 132mm trail, the handling still offers calm responsiveness when you get into the technical sections of a run.
The Mojo HD5 is the first of Ibis’ platforms to be released with their Traction Tuned Suspension, but it will be finding its way into future updates of Ibis bikes. Additional updates include new internal molded tubes that will make cable routing tons easier, as well as upper and lower linkage protection to keep the heart of the bike safe from damage. And since this bike is really all about loving your downhill sections, they have increased the dropper post length capacity, so the larger frame sizes can fit a 170mm dropper post while a small can still accommodate between a 125 and 150mm post.
The full carbon front and rear triangle keep the weight down and ensure a mighty rigid platform. Ibis also beefs it up with a 73mm threaded bottom bracket. The frame is ISCG-05 capability so you can mount that chain guide it you want to make sure you’re not dropping a chain on the rough descents that you’ll naturally be seeking out with this bike. A bottle cage can be mounted on the inside of the front triangle. This is a 1X specific design that can accommodate up to 2.6 inch tires to make the most of the traction. The Ibis Mojo HD5 is simply the latest greatest enduro racing bike to come from the innovative Californian company. It’ll make you dream of your next mountainous adventure.
