2020 Ibis Ripley 4
If you are looking for a full suspension mountain bike that is up for some playful trail slashing as well as epic alpine racing, then the Ibis Ripley 4 will give you that mix of energetic BMX-like friskiness and efficient durability needed for competitive events. And everything in between.
Versatility is the name of the game with the Ripley 4, something that might not surprise you if you have even a passing acquaintance with early versions of the Ripley. And when we say that Ibis has tweaked this iteration to give it a longer, slacker, steeper geometry, don’t think that they are just reacting to modern trends. Ibis has long been an initiator and innovator, and in the case of the Ripley 4, they are simply doubling down on what they started with the first Ripley in 2011. They want this bike to be able to tackle whatever you throw at it: pro-level epic or bike-park dorking off. This new Ripley has a slacker 66.5° head tube angle, and a seat tube angle that at 76° is steeper by three degrees. Then combined with a reach that has been extended by 4.5cm and a fork offset shortened to 44mm, and you get a prime example of a modern geo that will pair stability at speed with flickablity. All that will add up to one seriously fun day riding the hills.
The carbon frame helps to keep the Ripley light and durable, something that will pay dividends on your long days in the backcountry. The 29 inch wheels can accommodate up to 2.6 inch tires, amping up the traction. The DW-link suspension ensures seriously smooth and efficient 120mm worth of travel. They are not using the duel-eccentric link that we saw on the Ripley LS, largely as a way to free up valuable space along the seat tube. With that they made sure to increase the length of the dropper post in spite of the super low standover space. That makes it possible for you to size the Ripley 4 according to the reach you want, and not be hemmed in by the standover limits. Redesigning away from the duel-eccentric link also helped them shed significant weight.
Then taking a leaf out of their Ripmo’s book, they’ve used sealed IGUS bushings in the lower link to increase torsional rigidity, reduce maintenance requirements, and keep the setup as light as possible. The bearings remain in the upper link where they’ll work best with the rotation and load requirements. Essentially, they position bushings and bearings to match what each pivot point requires. Ibis has made it easy to deal with their internal cable routing, which will be a joy for you or your mechanic. The ISCG05 mount is removable, which is also a nice nod in the direction of user-friendliness. And the replaceable polycarbonate down tube protector will give you that peace of mind that your gorgeous Ibis carbon tubing won’t be compromised by an ill-fated rock or unseen tree branch.
The 29 inch full suspension Ibis Ripley 4 is a 1x specific trail bike. It will help you take real pleasure in your trail riding with its versatility which effortlessly combines confidence inspiring stability, and high-spirited popability.
