2020 Niner SIR 9
Whether you are particularly nostalgic about the steel era of cycling or just love it when a frame can be both comfortable and versatile, the Niner SIR 9 hardtail steel mountain bike will quickly move into the front of the line of favorite bikes in your collection.
When we say steel, we’re not talking just any steel, but the long revered Reynolds 853 tubing. Some of us longer-in-the-tooth types can remember obsessing over a Reynolds 853 racing frame back in the mid-80s, so to find the material of our heart’s desire in a frame like the Niner SIR 9 adds a certain extra spice to the prospect. But that’s not to say this is a retro throw-back type of frame, far from it. The SIR 9 takes the ride quality that has made steel such a respected material and combines it with the sort of design touches that are essential for a forward thinking modern hard tail mountain bike. Perhaps most importantly, this frame is compatible both with 29 inch wheels that can run up to 2.4 inch tires, or 27.5 inch wheels running 3.0 inch tires. So whether you are looking to build up an trail tank that can roll over sequoia-sized tree stumps or a snappier XC racer with crazy traction, this frame can give you the foundation you need. Another nice modern touch comes with the design of the rear dropouts that accommodates a 12 x 148 through axle with Boost spacing.
Niner applies their trail geometry to the frame, which gives a modern feel and encourages you to ride fast and aggressively, but is not so severe that you will start to feel uncomfortable as the hours stretch out behind you. Similarly, they have given a lot of thought and attention to the bottom bracket area, quite rightly recognizing that the bike’s personality will radiate from this crucial point. They use a PF30 bottom bracket so that you can run either the standard press fit or spring for a single speed set up by using an eccentric bottom bracket. And if you are worried this design won’t be able to withstand the type of watts your massive pistons can put out, don’t fret because they have included a hidden plate inside the chainstay yoke to stiffen the region and enhance power transfer.
But in all likelihood, this is not the bike you are going to be sticking your powermeter onto, rather this is a bike that will throw you back to those blissful days when you could just get on, start pedaling and see where the day would take you. Maybe you are looking to take your kids for rides on the fire roads in the woods just outside of town, or perhaps you want to saddle up and strike out for a multi-day unsupported tour. The SIR 9 will certainly be able to accommodate your every whim. Rear rack mounts that can hold up to 55 pounds of gear will make this an epic adventure bike, while extra tool bag and bottle mounts will give you additional places to store the essentials.
When you start thinking about how to kit this frame out, keep in mind it can run either a 1X or 2X set-up with a maximum ring capacity of 36 teeth for the 1X. The post mount brakes can handle up to 180mm rotor. Available in four sizes, the Niner SIR 9 will open up your options for fun and adventure.
