2020 Orbea Alma OMP
Though we all would like to hit the trails on a super sweet, lightweight XC racer, we can’t all spend more on our bikes than we do our cars. That’s why it’s great that the Orbea Alma OMP offers us all the great performance level as the top of the line OMR, but in excellent complete builds at a really great value.
The Alma is the hardtail XC specialist in the Orbea lineup. The OMP in the name indicates that this is the Orbea Monocoque Performance level. That means this is a carbon monocoque frame that has been developed to offer sturdy durability while keeping the weight low. Orbea uses a slightly heavier grade of carbon for this frame versus the OMR, which accounts for a slightly heavier frame and the lower price point. But it’s really not a dramatic weight gain, and if you are interested in hitting the trails for some fun and action, and not overly concerned about weight savings, than this will be a perfect option for you.
All the design features are the same as the OMR, such as the 4×4 structure at the top tube-seat tube junction. Orbea has designed the top tube to take the slightest extra little bend as it approaches the seat tube. It’s just the tiniest little curve, and it accomplishes a number of different things. First, the extra bend offers an additional flex point that will help absorb the trail hits keeping your tires tracking the ground, and saving your backside from the woes of rough vibrations. And then it allows the top tube to hit lower down on the seat tube, flowing neatly into the seatstays, and tightening up the rear triangle. It’s a clever method to get you the compliance you need while also increasing how stiff and responsive the rear end will feel.
For the rear end, the Orbea Alma does support Boost spacing, which means that you can get real big with your tire selection. Orbea has also expanded their Big Wheel line with the Alma, meaning that all four sizes will be available with 29 inch wheels, with the small and medium sizes still being available with the smaller 27.5 inch wheels. They want to make certain that all riders, no matter how tall, will have the type of rollover and handling they prefer. With that in mind, they have also incorporated their World Cup Geometry which will be aggressive enough for those important races, while slackening the head angle, you can feel super stable on demanding descents. But the steep seat angle will work with the lower stack height to increase the precision of the handling. Shorter chainstays will then keep the whole level of nippy acceleration that is essential for race winning attacks.
The Orbea Alma OMP is available as a complete bike with several different component options to make sure you can get the setup you like best. With four sizes, and two different wheel size options for the two smaller bikes, the Alma OMP will certainly be able to live up to your needs and expectations.
