2020 Orbea Occam OMR
With previous editions of the Occam, Orbea was trying to appeal to all tastes, offering versions in different wheel sizes as well as materials. That’s changed with this newest update; they’ve settled on the perfect formula with a 29 inch mid-travel trail bike with the high quality carbon Orbea Occam OMR.
Taking the place of the Occam AM and TR means that the Orbea Occam OMR has stopped shillyshallying around with different wheel sizes and suspension ranges. Combining the 29 inch wheels with the 140mm travel in the rear and a 140-150mm front suspension means that the Occam offers a longer, slacker setup to attack any all mountain trail. Just as with their other top of the line carbon frames, the OMR in the name stands for Orbea Monocoque Race. That should give you some idea about how much effort they have put into making this Occam as fast and fun as possible. Since it’s made from high quality carbon, the frame is extremely light, weighing around 2.3 kilos in a size medium without the shock.
The asymmetrical frame design also helps to keep the material at a minimum without compromising on the type of durability and rigidity that helps to make the Occam OMR confidence-inspiring. Adding an additional stay between the shock and frame also enhances the durability and rigidity at this high stress point. The design also allows for a left-loading water bottle cage inside the triangle. It’s not as hard to work with as it sounds, even for life-long righthanders. It also means that the controls for the shock are easily accessible even as you ride. Orbea has tinkered with the kinematics compared to the previous Occams, so that the suspension is even more sensitive and progressive.
Now that they are sticking with 29 inch wheels in the mid-travel range, Orbea also tweaked the geometry, tapping down the head angle from 67.5° to 66° while the seat angle gets steepened from 74° all the way up to 77°. With the reach being about 2cm longer than the former Occams, the overall effect is a seriously stable ride on descents, with the steep seat angle delivering crazy efficient pedaling. That will make this not only a dream to descend with, but also climbing becomes a lot more manageable and fun. And knowing that you will want to thrash your trails using the Occam OMR, Orbea has included a frame protector for the lower section of the down tube and just about fully wrapped the chainstays with a protector. The chainstay protector has the added feature of being ribbed which will keep chain slap noise to a minimum.
With a threaded bottom bracket and internal cable routing, including for the dropper post, the Orbea Occam OMR is a slick all mountain and killer trail bike that will remind you why you love heading deep into the mountains away from it all. Available in four sizes from S to XL, it should be able to fit anyone from 4’11” (150cm) tall to 6’6” (198cm), which is a pretty great range just about anyone can fit into.
