2020 Orbea Wild FS H10 20mph Bike
If you are considering buying an E-Bike, you are likely asking yourself where will the Orbea Wild FS fit in your cycling routine? An E-Bike is a great leveler. Do you want to hang out doing trails on the weekend with buddies who have tons more time to ride and keep fit during the week? Then the Orbea Wild FS would be a great way to make sure you won’t get left behind. Or do you long to take off exploring trails that would typically be too far away if you had to rely on your own leg power exclusively?
The goal for the Wild FS seems for it to be the type of e-mountain bike that can climb as well as a hard tail and descend like a DH demon. This Wild FS keeps it real by using hydroformed aluminum so that it remains light while being extremely durable. That will be a big help when you catch some air on your downhill run. But with the updates galore compared to the first iteration of the alu Wild FS means that it has been designed around 29 inch wheels with a geometry that will offer greater comfort and stability for beginners, while still enticing the elites with its long and low fit.
In a nutshell, they have slackened the head angle, and steepened the seat angle, which is the classic answer to getting the stability level up and enhancing pedaling efficiency. They’ve also lowered the bottom bracket to make it a beast when railing berms, and fitted it with 160mm cranks to reduce the chance of rock strikes when you are laying it down. The seat tube has been shortened in order to accommodate a longer dropper seat post. That plus the longer cockpit will give you tons of room to move while negotiating your gnarliest courses.
Tweaking the kinematics compared to the original Wild means that they have also increased its potential and progressiveness. With 160mm travel this will be a blast whether you are killing it at the bike park or tackling the most rugged mountain terrain you can find. The progressive leverage rate that the suspension offers will keep it pop-able and quick to recover at the same time. Paired with the 29 inch wheels that can accept up to 2.6 inch tires, and this is a bike that will track the ground and give you the grip to make the most of the power. It’ll be super forgiving even if you mess up on choosing a line.
But where Orbea really changes things up compared to the first Wild is by using the redoubtable 4th generation Bosch Performance CX engine, changing from the Shimano STEPS of the earlier version. Though that might not seem like a big deal, it’s actually quite interesting not only because Bosch is one of the big movers and shakers in the e-bike motor field, but this is their latest and greatest motor option, and has been developed precisely for a bike like the Wild FS. With this motor, you’ll never second guess your ability to climb up even the steepest pitches.
This new CX version of the Bosch motor has been made more powerful with max output increasing from 300% to 340% , while the motor itself is about half as big as its bulky predecessor. That makes designing the frame around it much less of a task, and keeps the overall appearance of the Wild FS on the side of suitably mountain bike-y instead of overly e-bike-y. Making it smaller also results in a weight savings, so you’re getting all that extra power and sacrificing less bulk as well as weight. And most importantly, it feels natural. No pedal bob or kickback, no lags in acceleration or pulsating of power output. It all feels very smooth and natural, sometimes to the point that you’ll be tempted to forget that you wouldn’t normally be going uphill this fast. It has been limited to 20mph, at which point it will cut out, but that will also not be felt once your nose is pointing downhill.
Another neat design feature is that you can remove your water bottle cage on the inside of the frame, and replace it with an additional battery, making this potentially 1125 W/h system one of the longest lasting, and perfect for all sorts of remote backwoods touring. For the main battery, stored on the underside of the downtube, there is a slick cover that will protect the whole shebang without being impossible to remove. They have included a lock on this cover, and a handy storage spot for the key in the hollow of the headset, so that you will never again have to pour out your backpack in the middle of nowhere to find your key again.
Getting up the hill was never so fast or fun as with the Orbea Wild FS e-mountain bike. It will make it possible for you to go higher, faster. This is an e-bike that can really go everywhere and do anything you want. Let the adventures begin!
