LES SL CARBON MOUNTAIN BIKE FRAME
We love a good full suspension bike, but when it comes to cross-country and marathon racing, a lightweight hardtail can often be a faster choice, allowing you to transfer more of your energy into forward momentum instead of losing it to the unwanted movement of the rear suspension. That’s why we’re happy to carry Pivot’s new LES SL, which happens to be one of the lightest race bikes we’ve ever thrown a leg over. With a size medium frame weighing in at only 2.3lb, it’s well over half a pound lighter than its predecessor. That doesn’t mean this bike flexes like a wet noodle under power though, because Pivot’s expertise in carbon fiber allows them to craft a frame with a high stiffness to weight ratio, all while maintaining the legendary ride quality that Pivot is known for. This allows you to save energy over the long haul while providing planted and predictable handling across any trail surface.
The LES SL achieves this slimmed down profile thanks to a new carbon lay-up that uses Pivot’s proven Hollow Core Molding Technology in conjunction with cutting edge raw materials to create a frame that is both lightweight and stiff, but also has perfectly-tuned compliance so you don’t get too beat up when the going gets rough. While the previous LES used the Swinger II dropout system that allowed you to alternate between 29in and 27.5+ wheels as well as geared and singlespeed setups, the LES SL uses ultra-lightweight carbon dropouts that are compatible with 29in wheels only, with enough clearance for up to 2.3in tires. Pivot also made the switch to a fully integrated headset, which saves additional grams and also lowers the stack height—both good things for the discerning rider and racer. You’ll also appreciate Pivot’s innovative Cable Port System, which works flawlessly with any drivetrain, including electronic systems like Di2, and also makes it easy to run a dropper post if desired.
The LES SL retains the same progressive XC geometry as its predecessor, characterized by a moderately slack head angle with longer reach figures that pair well with shorter stems, providing the kind of stability that excels over the longest races and the most technical courses, yet maintains the razor-sharp agility that makes it a short track racer’s dream bike, too. Pivot felt no need to change the bike’s geometry, as it has already racked up numerous wins and course records in races around the world, and is the weapon of choice for their World Cup XC, Tour Divide, and 24-hour racers whenever the course is smooth and fast. With these types of accolades, you know the geometry is already dialed.
